How to get into the Music Production industry…

by | Oct 12, 2020

What does a music producer do? Music producers at its simplest, take charge of the music recording process. Comparatively, they are like film directors, they take charge of the process and make sure everything goes smoothly. Their input is crucial to the recording process. Producers are technically savvy and know the ins and outs of the technological side of it all. They know how the boards work and are able to mix the recorded content on their computers in multiple different types of editing software. In addition to being tech-wizards, music producers put their input in on the creative process. In a sense, they also act as co-writes and throw in some suggestions to better enhance the quality of the sounds being created. Like film directors, they are the organization key-holders. Without them, everything could become a wild trainwreck. Music producers are there to make sure the recording process goes as smoothly as possible.

How do you get involved?

Well to start out, one needs to start familiarising themselves with audio editing software. Things you’ll need a computer, a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), and something to listen to your work (headphones). Without these elements, you will not be able to create any type of music. Your music lives within the DAW. In a DAW, you are able to create and manipulate whatever sounds you are trying to create. Once you establish a production home base, you can start getting familiar with different software, such as Audacity, Protools, Acid, even Garageband can work depending on what you want to create. Next, you are going to need a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) interface. Without an interface, you are not going to be able to record the sounds directly in the DAW of your choice.

An additional step is to start venturing into songwriting. Writing your own songs and producing them is taking the first initial steps into music production. Writing can be anything you want it to be from writing down lyrics and creating melodies, or taking what you hear in your head and transposing it into a beat in your DAW.

These basic fundamentals are just the start of music production. At home recordings and productions are great for someone who is just starting out but they cannot even begin to compare to working in a proper setting like a recording studio. When creating at home there are many limitations, which is why it makes for such a great startup, but in the end, being around proper gear in a studio is really going to help rising Music Producers to unlock their full potential.
